Justice, governance and transformations, tipping points and living within just Earth system boundaries – Future Earth / Earth Commission, Earth System Governance Conference, Nijmegen

Session Overview Gupta, J. (2023). Justice, governance and transformations, tipping points and living within just Earth system boundaries – Future Earth / Earth Commission, Earth System Governance Conference, Nijmegen, 25 October Details Report: Tipping points are conditions beyond which changes in social and biophysical systems become self-perpetuating, and may lead to abrupt, irreversible, and dangerous impacts with serious implications for humanity. In this semi-plenary we explore the topic of social tipping points, and the transformations that can lead us to a just and sustainable future. We convene an interdisciplinary group of Earth system scientists to draw on the Earth Commission concept of Earth system boundaries (ESBs) and discuss the transformations necessary to live within the ESBs, avoid tipping points, and perpetuate a safe and just future for people and the planet. With a focus on justice, we place literature on tipping points in conversation with just transformations, and the evolution of the planetary boundaries framework for a lively, insightful discussion on viable futures and how to get there. Topics will include transformative planetary justice in the Anthropocene, interspecies justice, and the need for social and physical scientists and policymakers and other stakeholders to be in conversation for best possible outcomes. Agenda: Plenary panelists: Joyeeta Gupta, Tim Lenton, Manjana Milkoreit, Discussants: Diana Liverman, Chukwumerije Okereke, Jane Madgwick, Executive Director Moderator: Lisa Jacobson, Program Manager Earth Commission, Future Earth Global Hub Sweden

Keynote, Earth System Justice, Springtij Forum, 2023, 20 September, Terschelling

Session Overview Gupta, J. (2023). Keynote, Earth System Justice, Springtij Forum, 2023, 20 September, Terschelling Details Summary: “We mop with the faucet open. Only with a very small mop and a very big faucet. The world is a third world country”. So opened Professor Joyeeta Gupta’s plea for a global constitution at Springtij Forum 2023 at Terschelling. “It is the top 4% who consume and pollute as much as we would need to provide all people on earth with the minimum access to food, water, electricity and infrastructure. We need to do something about global inequality. We have to think differently. I think we need to think differently about what makes us happy. Why can’t we be happy with less. I’m sure even very rich people can be happy with less. They just don’t know it yet.” “We need a global constitution that thinks long-term and protects us all from ourselves. A global-level constitution that says everyone has certain rights to basic resources and the right not to be harmed by people elsewhere in the world.” Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZYse-26q8Lg

Several related questions arise, among which: How Europe’s climate policies and tools can help set the right research and investment priorities to help make it happen? What are the key priorities for climate-related research in the short and medium terms, and how can EU funding support and leverage the success of green tech incubators, entrepreneurs and international cooperation? What is the responsibility of large corporations and private investments in R&I in the process? And how can Europe reposition value chains to obtain the resources it lacks while avoiding the creation of new dependencies?
