Earth system justice: Without a just approach we may not be able to live within Earth system boundaries. Keynote at “Transformation Labs, Researching Pathways towards Sustainable Development”, University of Copenhagen, Denmark (CLIFF/Earth Commission), 17 February

Session Overview Gupta, J. (2023). Earth system justice: Without a just approach we may not be able to live within Earth system boundaries. Keynote at “Transformation Labs, Researching Pathways towards Sustainable Development”, University of Copenhagen, Denmark (CLIFF/Earth Commission), 17 February Details Report: Kick-of seminar and three rounds of steered discussions between scientists, policy makers and practitioners that will lead to concrete contributions to transformation that can be implemented immediately. The starting point is the six entry points for sustainable development in the UN Global Sustainable Development Report 2019 (many of the authors of the report are also helping us with the process). We will use the pillars for discussing proposals and research that can fast track sustainable development. The process will be broad and have participants from various backgrounds and the goal of the kick-off is to provide thought-provoking ideas for discussion and development of common ground for the discussions that will follow later in the process. The three keynote speakers will share their views of the most pressing issues under the headlines of the six levers in the GSDR-report and that their talks will reflect not only research results but be forward-looking and lay foundations for a broad discussion of how researchers, policy-makers, citizens and politicians might find common pathways for sustainable development. video

Session Overview Johan Rockstrom and Joyeeta Gupta (2023), Safe and Just Earth system boundaries, Plenary session on Leading the Charge Through Earth’s New Normal, World Economic Forum, Davos, 18 January Details Report: Prof. Johan Rockström and Prof. Joyeeta Gupta will preview groundbreaking science of an Earth Commission report due out in early 2023. This report outlines newly quantified ‘Earth System Boundaries’ designed to safeguard a stable and resilient planet and underpin the setting of science-based targets for businesses, cities and governments. Crucially, these new boundaries account for Earth system impacts and human wellbeing and justice. This pioneering new science proposes clear new boundaries, like the Paris Agreement’s 1.5C limit for climate, for several interconnected global commons: Climate, Biosphere (intact nature and managed nature), Freshwater (ground and surface), Fertilizers (phosphorus and nitrogen) and Aerosol Pollutants (air quality). It is the first-time justice has been factored into an assessment of the state of the planet and represents a quantum leap in our ability to understand Earth’s capacity to sustain life, and of the role we humans play as guardians of our only home and each other. video Moderator Gim Huay Neo, Managing Director, Centre for Nature and Climate, World Economic Forum Geneva Speakers: Joyeeta Gupta, Professor of Environment and Development in the Global South, University of Amsterdam and Earth Commission co-chair Johan Rockström, Director, Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and Earth Commission co-chair Roshni Nadar Malhotra, Chairperson, HCL Technologies Ltd Al Gore, Vice-President of the United States (1993-2001); Chairman and Co-Founder, Generation Investment Management LLP Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego, President of Colombia, Colombia Government Marc Benioff, Chair and Co-Chief Executive Officer, Salesforce Andrew Forrest, Chairman and Founder, Fortescue Metals Group Limited Fawn Sharp, President, National Congress of American Indians Yo-Yo Ma, Cellist
