Lecture on Climate Change and Fossil Fuel

During this 3 hour session, JG presented her usual lecture on climate change and fossil fuel to 18 junior diplomats from Central Asia and Mongolia. Questions and comments included:

  • Newspapers in these countries do not really cover climate change;
  • The state also does not engage in educating the public;
  • There is no real understanding of the impacts of climate change on these countries, although they are worried about what is happening to the Aral Sea;
  • There is no discussion on phasing down/out fossil fuel in these countries.
  • What is the hope story on climate change?
  • In Tajikistan, till 2019, fossil energy was free for everyone; only post Paris is there a price on fossil fuel.
  • Is green technology the way out of the fossil fuel crises? What exactly is green technology?
  • What can be the role of diplomats in foreign affairs ministries?
  • Kazakhstan is not thinking of getting rid of its fossil fuel.  Fossil fuel sustains the economy.
